圣灵是《使徒行传》里的主角，也是教会史里的主角。耶稣预言说，藉着祂的信徒在圣灵推动下所做的见证，福音将会从耶路撒冷（城市）传到犹太全地和撒玛利亚（地区），“直到地极”。（参徒 1:8）

在《使徒行传》第二章中，我们看到圣灵强烈的工作是如何开始的。“从天上有响声下来，好像一阵大风吹过”，（参徒 2:2）使徒们被圣灵充满了。正如我们前面提到的，神的灵和祂的大能常常与风的意象关联在一起。“大风的响声”呼应了神用“大风”为祂的子民开辟过红海的道路。（参出 14:21）此外，正如施洗约翰所预言的，耶稣的工作将使人们接受“圣灵与火”的洗礼（参太 3:11）——在《使徒行传》第二章，当圣灵充满使徒们时，好像“有舌头如火焰……落在他们各人头上。”（参徒 2:3）

所以在五旬节，神的子民，耶稣的跟随者，藉着风（圣灵）、火和水得以更新。圣灵之风吹拂着使徒们，方言的舌头如火落在他们身上——当天晚些时候，有三千人信了耶稣并接受了水的洗礼。（参徒 2:41）

The Holy Spirit is the main character in the book of Acts—and in the growth of the church. And through the Spirit-powered witness of his followers, Jesus said, the gospel will spread from Jerusalem (the city), to Judea and Samaria (the region), "to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8).

In Acts 2 we see how that work of the Holy Spirit began. "A sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven," and Jesus' apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit. As we have noted earlier, the Spirit of God and his mighty acts are often associated with wind. And the "sound... of a violent wind" echoes the power of the "strong wind" God used to make a pathway for his people through the Red Sea (Exodus 14:21). What's more, as John the Baptist had prophesied, the work of Jesus would result in people being baptized "with the Holy Spirit and fire" (Matthew 3:11)—and in Acts 2, as the Holy Spirit filled Jesus' apostles, "what seemed to be tongues of fire...came to rest on each of them."

So on Pentecost, the people of God, followers of Jesus, were renewed through a wind (Spirit), fire, and water. The wind of the Holy Spirit rushed on the apostles, and fire alighted on them—and later that day 3,000 people came to faith in Jesus and were baptized (Acts 2:41).
